Change a Voter's Party

Voters who want to change their political party affiliation on the voter registration rolls must notify the Supervisor of Elections by one of the following methods:

  • A Florida Voter Registration Application Form (NVRA form) or a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA form).

Application forms can be submitted to any Florida elections office. They need not be processed by the voter's resident county. See Name, Address, and Party Changes from an NVRA or FPCA Form for instructions on processing the form. If the voter is not local, the county is required to suspend the application containing the party change to the voter's resident county. See Suspend a Voter Application for instructions.

Application forms can also be submitted to any Florida driver license office where the change will be processed by HSMV. If the voter’s driver license, Florida ID, or social security number has already been verified, the party change simply flows from HSMV into FVRS and from there to the county database, with no action required on the county’s part. However, if the ID has not been verified, the party change taken by HSMV will come to the county as a suspended application. See Process Applications Suspended to Your County for more information.

If a voter is moving into your county from another Florida county and their application form includes a party change, you can make the address change and party change at the same time. You do not need to save the address change and then reopen the record to make the party change.

If a voter's registration status is Incomplete or Pending, you cannot modify their record, but you can make changes to their online application form. Access the application form by going to VOTER REGISTRATION > Application Forms. Then enter the voter's former name on the Find a Voter dialog and click Application Search.

  • A signed written notice containing their date of birth or voter registration number. In this case, you should change the voter's party on their Maint tab and record a voter response. See Party Changes from a Written Notice for instructions.

Changes to a local voter’s political party affiliation submitted after book closing for a primary election can be processed during the freeze period, but are deferred until the day after the primary. See Party Changes after Book Closing for a Primary for more information.
