About

the Redistricting Process

After new district boundaries have been defined by the legislature, you will need to update your county database with the new street, precinct, and district data. This topic provides an overview of the redistricting process.

1.     Create a Redistricting database where you can perform the redistricting tasks and testing without affecting the production database. Note that the Redistricting database is not connected to FVRS.

2.     In the Redistricting database, update your street data using the new district data from maps or your GIS system:

GEOElections—Import the district data from GEOElections into Voter Focus. See About the GeoElections Interface to Voter Focus for more information.

Maptitude, Esri ArcGIS for Desktop, and similar GIS systems—Import the district data from the GIS system into Voter Focus. See About the Generic GIS Interface for more information.

Maps—Enter the data from the maps into the Redistricting database using the Streets application in Voter Focus. See How to Add a Street to the Database for more information.

Note  If you create new polling places in the Redistricting database, you will also need to create them in the live database BEFORE copying the new data from Redistricting to the live database (in step 5, below).

3.     Run these programs:

Redistricting Update

Recalculate Totals

Integrity Check

4.     If the Integrity Check program reveals errors, adjust the street information and repeat step 3 until the Integrity Check runs without errors.

5.     Switch to the live database and copy the street tables from the Redistricting database to the live database.

6.     Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the live database. The program runs on the production database will take much more time than they did on the Redistricting database, particularly if every voter record requires adjustment. This is to be expected, as adjusting every voter is resource- and time-intensive.

7.     Send the new streets data to FVRS by running the Copy Streets Table to FVRS program on the live database.
