Add a Street to or Change a Street in the Database
Streets are defined in the Voter Focus database as street segments. For a new street in your county, it might be necessary to break it up into several street segments, particularly if the street crosses a precinct boundary.
See Issues to Avoid when Maintaining Street Segments for additional information on street segment maintenance.
- Go to STREETS & PRECINCTS > Street Maintenance. The Street Search Parameters dialog displays.
- Enter a street name and any additional values, such as direction, type, and suffix, and then click Search.
- Street segments exist—If one or more street segments with the name entered exist in the database, they are listed in the left pane. Do one of the following:
- Change existing—This is needed when the United States Post Office reclassifies an address. This often occurs when rural routes are being assigned street designations. Select one of the segments listed in the grid. The fields on the right side of the dialog are updated based on the saved settings for the selected segment.
- Add new—Click New on the toolbar to clear the fields on the dialog. Notice the message New Street Record in the Reference ID field.
- No street segments exist—If no records with the same name exist in the database, the street information you entered for your search is pre-filled on the Street Segment Maintenance dialog and the message New Street Record appears in the Reference ID field.
- Select Apartment Number Required if apartment numbers or letters are always used in this street segment.
- If the segment is for only one side of the street, select Odd Numbers Only or Even Numbers Only and choose a compass direction from Odd Numbers Side for the odd-numbered side of the street. (You will need to do this even if the street segment you are currently defining is the even side.) If the street segment encompasses both sides of the street, leave the setting at Odd & Even Numbers.
- Select from the following additional options, if needed:
- No Residential Delivery-Force Mailing Address—Select for street segments not served by the USPS. Voters residing in this street segment are required to have a mailing address in their voter registration record and all mail will be sent to the mailing address.
- Not a Valid Residence Address—Select for street segments that don't lie in residential areas, so that addresses within the segment can't be used as residential addresses in voter records. Note that if the segment contains some residential addresses, you must create one or more separate street segments to contain those residences.
- For new segments, enter a precinct or precinct split.
- For new segments, select a city from the Mailing City list.
- Click Save. One of the following occurs:
- Changed segment. If changing a segment that is assigned to one or more voters, you are prompted to confirm whether to apply the address change to those voters. You can also select to print a new Voter information card.
- New segment. The new street is added to the left pane on the dialog.
