Troubleshoot the Ballot Printing Connection
The procedure described in this section should be performed by a knowledgeable network technician. We do not describe every step that might be taken here, because conditions vary, depending on your ballot-printing vendor and your county’s network setup.
If ballots are not being printed on the ballot-printing system when a voter is checked in on an EViD station, take the following steps to determine why:
-
Plug a keyboard into the EViD station.
We recommend you use a USB keyboard, which can be plugged into one of the USB ports on the EViD station. -
Verify that the EViD station and the ballot printing control computer are properly networked together and that the IP addresses of both systems put them in the same subnet. This can involve several activities, which can differ depending on your county’s setup. If you are unsure what to do here, call VR Systems.
-
On the EViD station, exit FastVoterCheck-in.
-
On the EViD station, which should now display the Microsoft Windows desktop, go to My Computer and type the name of the ballot printing control computer into the address bar. You can use either the IP address or the host name. Precede the name with double backslashes:
\\<IP address> or \\<host name>
If you then see a network login dialog, it means the EViD station cannot connect to the ballot printing computer. The likely reason is that security on the computer is too constrained. If you need assistance with the security configuration on the ballot printing computer, contact your ballot printing vendor. -
On the EViD station, open the share for your ballot-printing vendor. EViD expects the vendor share names to be:
Runbeck.Sentio
ABS Balotar and Runbeck
Unity
ES&S Unity
BODPrint
Dominion GEMS
-
If a share for your ballot-printing vendor is not available, the ballot-printing control computer is not correctly configured. Contact your vendor.
-
Create a simple text file and save it in the share for your vendor.
If you cannot save the file, there is a problem with the ballot-printing computer configuration. Contact your vendor.
If you can save the file, the issue is likely with the EViD station. Contact VR Systems for further assistance.
